I have previously talked a bit about some key design elements when considering the layout of your outdoor space.  Some of the core ideas involve the spatial layout, including floors, walls and ‘ceilings’.  The overhead plane, or ceiling, offers unique opportunities to enhance your outdoor experience.

In the world of landscape design, a ceiling is any kind of a structure that provides an overhead enclosure.  Generally, its purpose is to offer a sense of intimacy and defined space, often creating the effect of an ‘outdoor room’.  They can also serve as a functional solution to manage weather conditions such as rain and sun/shade.  In all cases, there will be the added benefit of a cozy and immersive environment to relax, entertain, and enjoy.

In outdoor design, an overhead structure can take the form of a pergola, gazebo, hanging greenery such as vines or other climbing plants, and even existing or new tree canopy.  These can be combined with strategic outdoor lighting placement to add warmth and beauty during the evening hours.  There are also many new products on the market, such as a sun shade or even outdoor fabric installations, that can offer a more temporary solution in a particular area.

Creating an outdoor overhead structure is a wonderful way to create a warm, ambient environment that connects spaces together and extends your indoor living space outdoors.
